  Shielding Gas Chemical Behavior Uses
  Argon (Ar) Inert Welding virtually all metals except steel
  Helium (He) Inert Al & Cu alloys four greater heat and to minimize porosity
  Ar & He (30-80 to 50-50%) Inert Al & Cu alloys for greater heat and to minimize porosity, but with quieter, more readily controlled arc action
  Nitrogen (N2) Reducing On Cu, very powerful arc
  Ar + 25-30% N2 Reducing On Cu, powerful but smoother operating more readily controlled arc than with N2
  Ar + 1-2% O2 Oxidation SS & alloy steels, also for some deoxidized copper alloys
  Ar + 3-4% O2 Oxidation Plain carbon, alloy & ss (generally requires highly deoxidized wire)
  Ar + 20-30% O2 Oxidation Various Steels, mainly with short-circuiting arc
  Ar +5% O2 + 15% CO2 Oxidation Various steels using deoxidized wire
  Co2 Oxidation Plain-carbon & low alloy steels, deoxidized wire is essential
  Co2 + 3-10% O2 Oxidation Various Steels using deoxidized wire
